BILLIONS of pounds of households’ money is to be funnelled into hydrogen production as Britain strives to create a market in the clean-burning gas.

Manufacturers are in line to be guaranteed a price for their hydrogen by the Government so they do not have to sell to customers at a loss, under plans unveiled in consultation papers today.

The subsidy is expected to be funded through either higher bills or with money from the public purse.

Hydrogen fuel is viewed as a key technology by officials racing to meet Boris Johnson’s target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Millions of households are likely to have hydrogen boilers installed, replacing natural gas, and heavy vehicles such as lorries or aeroplanes will in future run on hydrogen instead of diesel.

EXCESS electricity from offshore wind farms could be used to produce hydrogen for heating and cars.

Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business and Energy Secretary, plans to increase the use of low-carbon hydrogen, as part of the target to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050.
One option being considered by ministers is subsidising the production of the chemical using excess energy generated by wind farms.

The hydrogen strategy, which is due to be published this week, is expected to outline government plans for a “twin track” approach to back both “green” hydrogen, which is made from water using an electric current, and “blue” hydrogen, made from natural gas.

Dublin-listed pharmaceutical services company Open Orphan has announced that its subsidiary, Hvivo, has developed a controlled human malaria infection challenge model.

In virus challenge studies, healthy volunteers are administered a pathogenic or virulent strain of virus. These challenge agents are then used in controlled human infection studies, an area that Hvivo has focused on since 2001.

The company said the move would both strengthen and further diversify its portfolio of viral challenge study models.
