Thankfully the portfolio companies are not overly dependent on the UK economy. Food price inflation was reported at 12.6% yesterday. I think the BOE are making a big mistake in not being more aggressive with rate rises.

I would say many of the portfolio companies are more dependent on the US Europe and APAC.

Interesting development. Selling some 2020 kit to Chinese data centres affected by the US chips export ban.

I don't think this should be too much of an issue as US most interested in stopping Chinese access to the most recent advanced chips.

Nvidia and AMD can still sell chips to China. Just not their latest ones.

Private equity are obviously happy to buy companies outright or take minority stakes in tech companies.

But Oakley are buying mid market companies with high revenues that they believe they can grow further. The day to day management will be much more hands on than say a VC having a seat on the board.

Oakley would not invest in pre revenue or pre profit tech start ups the way MV do. Their tech interest also seems limited to Web hosting and e-commerce solutions.

Many of these are pre revenue and so that's where venture capital comes in.

I would be surprised to see Oakley participate in a funding round alongside MV. It would be more likely that they would buy a portfolio company like say Perkbox that is breaking even believing they could do a better job than current management.

I noticed the other day that this company had been added to the list of portfolio companies on the website. Company is in the business automation sector, similar to UI Path but with the USP of having the ability to rapidly process unstructured data from a variety of sources including pdfs and even scanned images of notes in bad handwriting. (UI Path bought the UK company ReInfer for similar tech although I believe that is limited to reading email conversations).

Can find no record of a publicised investment by either Draper Esprit, MV or Earlybird in the company. There was a mention of an unannounced investment in an unnamed intelligent process company in last years annual report so I wonder if it was from that.

Should read would NOT invest in a start-up

Oakley is not a VC investor. They are private equity, buying out existing companies whole or by carving out a chunk. These companies will typically be earning decent revenues if not profits.

They would invest in a speculative start up like Paragraf or Riverlane, so not really a good comparator.

Institutonal investors can buy stock in bulk through "dark pools" so as to limit the impact on price.

Also if investors make too much of someone potentially buy in maybe they will be put off.

All it takes is for them to change their minds.

Best to invest because you have a conviction about the stock. Not because someone else does.

I think Freetrade may turn out to be very problematic.

They have co-opted their user base by encouraging them to crowdfund them at extremely high valuations on various occasions.
