Jaf, I was just looking at the misconception, issue. I certainly would not be able to comment on the translations from the Latin or anything else. However, as I understand things there was some bad press, but the fact remains his principle on fire precautions did make their mark with the word ‘ curfew’ . It was the term then used for putting fires out after dark. It seems from the fires that occurred at the time, not withstanding Christians being scapegoated, that he did some sensible stuff with precautions that become twisted in folklore to something negative- which they were not.
Might have even saved some lives.
I have a passing interest in reading penguin books based on writings of the Romans and Greeks, but there is a lot of bias- Herodotus looks to be a right old one for it.
