Seeking Alpha Update17 Oct 2014 13:11
Summary
•Base Resources is able to increase its resource estimate despite mining depletion.
•This is positively surprising, as I hadn’t anticipated this in my original article.
•The investment thesis remains standing, if the ramp-up continues to go as expected, Kwale will be a high-margin operation.
Base Resources (OTC:BSRUF) has announced the results of an updated resource estimate on its Kwale mineral sands project in Kenya. It's refreshing to see the total tonnage increased by 5%, which includes a 2% increase in heavy minerals, despite the depletion due to ongoing mining activities. This resource update is good news for Base, and now it's understandable why its lenders were so generous by allowing the company to postpone the first payment date on its debt.
The total measured and indicated resources at Kwale now stand at a very respectable 153 million tonnes, which contains approximately 7.25 million tonnes of heavy minerals. This compares favorably to the previous estimate (from 2011) containing 146 million tonnes of which 7.1 million tonnes were heavy minerals. This update, three years after the previous resource estimate, strengthens my confidence in the Kwale project as being a very impressive heavy minerals mine. As 81% of the material tonnes is now part of the measured resource category (which is the third highest tier and just one step below probable reserves), there's no doubt that the 'stuff' is there, and now it all comes down to trust the people on the ground to make sure they can deliver.
The Kwale project has started its operations earlier this year and is expected to produce a substantial amount of ilmenite. The ramp-up of the production is going according to plan, as every quarter the output of ilmenite, rutile and zircon continues to increase (last quarter, the ilmenite production surpassed the 100,000 tonnes mark). As Base's debt load is lower than, for instance, Kenmare Resources' debt position, I continue to prefer Base's Kwale project as my favorite ilmenite producer.
