I'm all for honest debate. Let's start with "the gas price has trebled". Currently it's £109/thm. It peaked during the Ukraine war at £632/thm. Prior to the war it was about the same and we've seen a trough before that and since (in 2024) of around £50/thm. So it hasn't trebled from any point in recent history.
The reason the electric price is based on the gas price is that no contractors would be interested in building renewables at a lower price, it's not viable. So they sold wind contracts during the Ukraine war which condemned us to high electricity prices for the foreseeable future, some 4x what America pays. We could change the pricing structure at the drop of a hat, but then they couldn't hide the green subsidies from us.
There is a place for FF until a CHEAP, viable, reliable and non-intermittent source of energy is established, we are a long way from that and starving, freezing and even killing our citizens on the Altar of climate fantasy will go down as one of the worst atrocities in the history of the UK.
The Saudis are the second largest producer, the US produces more and its output is holding prices down. The third largest producer is Russia. Shortly, the UK will produce none at all and be dependent on other countries for its energy.
With a nutter in number 10 who is determined to alienate the US, and Russian oil and gas out of bounds, that could very well leave us up a certain creek without a paddle.
And it's totally unnecessary, we have hundreds of years and gas and oil in our own reserves yet won't use it. The concept that you can export your emissions to other countries is frankly ridiculous.
