Don't assume either that people are shorting shares because they are critical of companies. There was just one morsel of sense in wakeup's posts and that was that you need to be able to recognise the good and the bad features of any company you are invested in. What I suspect that poster was about was trying to whoop up demand and the price of tesco to then make it worthwhile to short it down to where it is now then disappear from the bbs or take a new name. If individuals want to take the risk of spread betting then I personally wouldn't want to limit their freedom of choice. With regard to institutional shorting well then there would be no shorting if there were no institutional investors willing to let their own shares be shorted. I like being able to see which companies are shorting which companies now but it would be even more interesting to see which significant investors are letting their shares be shorted. As far as I'm concerned these kind of protests fall on deaf ears. You saw Ant1986 on the tesco bb. He contacted his MP etc. about big companies with minimal free floats being able to take companies over for a song when said companies should not have been allowed to list in the first place. I've already pointed out that the FCA have picked on very few folk besides Sir Kenneth Morrison for flouting the Disclosure and Transparency regulations. I suspect that the problem is fairly widespread and there are big investors selling off their investments in ailing companies without making the appropriate disclosures. Also suspect that not all companies will be complying fully and on time with the shorting disclosure regulations. It is really up to the fca to commit the time and resources to tackle such issues but if you do contact them then you will not hear the outcome of their investigations. Would really need a totally independent body to be set up to do a proper job. Vincent Cable's under enough pressure already to explain who got the big allocations of Royal Mail shares and for why. Had a quick look at the holdings rnses and couldn't find any earlier than 8th April 2013 re. toscafund when they increased their holding. I guess only the Market Maker will know to the exact penny. Remember you once saying this was worth a very low figure - something like 10p a share was it. You might be right unless there is any truth in matlot's posts that some positive news is on the way. Personally I've done enough analysing here and not sure I want to read any post mortem on toscafund's exit.

No I'm no genuis - but neither is anybody else around here. I sensed that there would be a quick sell off in the rsa shares issued under the rights issue and did the right thing for me which was to sell. It was sheer luck that I got the top selling price on the day in question and sheer luck that I said spd would go down to £7.30 when it was over £8. If I have been saying for months that tesco and the other supermarkets were likely to face tough times s then that's more through observing the increased competition at both ends of the market. Given what Mike Ashley has done with debs since January then I'm over the moon at how its share price reacted today. I don't think anybody would grudge the holders/traders at debs their day in the sun today. I'm in this game for exactly the same purposes as you. If we don't always agree then that's okay. Not willing to spend time checking this out but ask yourself what price they first bought in here at was it not fairly low ( I think you were around at the time in a more postive frame of mind than now) and then ask yourself when they topped up and the price they sold at. Not sure if matlot is hinting that there will be a takeover or buyout here and need to take time to look into max's lock in period. Been around this share since a couple of week's before the bear raid on 22nd March last year (remember it well as it was a family birthday on a Friday ) and came home to find the share price decimated in the space of a couple of hours. Mind you on another Friday with hmv shares in January 2012, I came home to find my shares up over 200% so you need to be prepared to take the rough with the smooth if you are into more risky shares. Maybe this share has found its correct trading level now and there will not be too much movement either way until major news and I am on the hunt for divis but I personally don't want to do anything other than be ultra cautious this week as I've got two days of calm weather ahead of me watching the Atlantic waves on my holidays.
