Harnessing Tanzania’s Mineral Wealth for Clean Energy and Sustainable Development
📍 Tanga, Tanzania
Today, December 4, 2024, the Tanzanian government reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging the expertise of geologists and scientists in transitioning from polluting energy sources to clean energy. Speaking at the Annual Geologists’ Conference in Tanga, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Minerals, Msafiri Mbibo, lauded the sector's contributions to Tanzania's sustainable economic development.
"The discovery of valuable resources such as natural gas, helium, and other minerals in Tanzania is a testament to the remarkable expertise of our geoscientists. Your contributions are truly commendable," said Mbibo, who represented the Minister of Minerals.
Mbibo highlighted key achievements in the mining sector, including its growing contribution to the national economy and the creation of over 16,000 direct jobs, many of which are now held by Tanzanians in senior project roles. He also outlined strategic government initiatives to strengthen the sector, such as:
Establishing mineral markets and buying centers nationwide.
Promoting in-country value addition to reduce the export of raw materials.
Improving the operating environment for small-scale miners.
Implementing flagship programs like Mining for Brighter Tomorrow (MBT) and enforcing Local Content Regulations.
In addressing the longstanding absence of a Geoscientists’ Registration Board, Mbibo assured participants that the issue is under active consideration by the ministry in collaboration with the Geologists’ Association of Tanzania.
Themed “Utilizing Tanzania’s Mineral Wealth for Sustainable Economic Development and Transitioning to Clean Energy,” the conference underscores the vital role of geoscientists in achieving Vision 2030’s ambitious agenda of transforming minerals into life and wealth.
