Our latest Investing Matters Podcast episode with QuotedData's Edward Marten has just been released. Listen here.
I suspect many new traders/PI's have not looked at Menzies and are pilling into the more obvious recovery stocks like airlines etc. There is a strange phenomenon where several shares have ended up with a higher mcap since being pummeled by covid than they had in 2019 when they actually made money.
The peak mcap for RR over the last 5 years was around 27bn, and this is against the backdrop of Brexit uncertainty amid the Trent issues. Today the mcap is less than 8bn, so the potential is obvious given the restructuring will leave the company leaner and most margain-focussed. The company is also well positioned for the green revolution with a focus on low carbon technologies, nuclear energy, ai and even space exploration. The company has enough cash runway and with several vaccines now on the go this is significantly de-risked. I doubt given the vital position RR plays in UK defence, and the relative niche position it enjoys in the jet engine industry that it would ever be allowed to fold in any case. Everything dropped last week so will be interesting to see what this week brings...
I wonder how much of the selling pressure is a hangover from the placing shares? They were due for admission on the 25th but there was no real movement sp wise, then after spiking to 0.57 on Monday there have been constant whole number sells circa 500k each...
Yes I don't think there will be any issue shifting the stuff should they find any. With any luck they will be able to use some of the proceeds to speed up the commercialisation of the other assets as well to keep dilution to a minimum...
Here is the link to the website anyway. They still make jewelry out of some of the remaining gold from Clogau, often a tiny scrap but due to the scarcity it acts as something of a usp. Hopefully the drilling will intersect some decent gold targets, not long now...

True Anselmo, gold is at an all time high and Welsh gold attracts many multiples of the spot gold price so even a small discovery could still bring big rewards. Its worth remembering that Fosterville was an old disused mine that changed hands over many years until Kirland Lake explored at depth from within the existing mine and found one of the worlds largest gold reserves. I very much doubt that will happen here, but its an extreme example that this kind of model (extending existing mines using modern techniques) can work well and bring the reward of early production. Extending a mine costs way less than building one!
I agree that a GGP mcap is a tad optimistic. That said, hopefully with the Welsh gold premium even a small reserve would still be commercially viable and extending an existing mine will mean production long before GGP. The recent rise is welcome, but the re-rate just brings the sp closer to what it should be before it was oversold. Fosterville esk gold discovery aside, on the current state of the assets of about £25m is fair, and we are still at half that.
Not sure if this has been posted already, but...

Fingers crossed...
A lot of people buy in in advance of an RNS so I would expect some of these people selling now and for the SP to dip a little before recovering. If gold is found in significant quantities then the SP should rocket from here. If it isn't...it won't. At least after years of waiting we will soon know either way!
Nice to see the share price holding steady for a change. Hopefully once the sellers have cleared we will get another bump up.
Before they can mine anything they have had to refurbish the mine, get planning permission and identify drill targets as its pointless just digging away in places with no gold mineralisation. Finally the real work will be getting underway, it costs far less to recommission an existing mine than to create a new one and there are several companies that have made a success of mining historic sites using modern techniques, the obvious case being Kirkland Lake but I wouldn't expect anything quite so dramatic here. Still, you never know! Haha
It's been a long time coming, with lots of dilution along the way but with most of the less glamorous mine repair work completed we finally aren't too far off finding out if there is actually commercially recoverable grades to be had. The obvious risk is that there isn't, but at least with oil, Ilmenite and Graphite to fall back on it's not a total bust unlike so many junior explorers yet to find anything of value yet with inflated mcaps driven by hype alone. Should be an interesting few months.
Why bash dsfat/mullins? Sure they didn't force you to invest here? These are strange and troubling times, so much so that I even agree with Parsley2 - there is an international crisis and every share is down. The question is, from a 2m mcap will alba multi-bag or fold. Most companies globally have significant debt and outgoings, we have a guy in wales with a trowel. With the company being funded for a while at least hopefully they can ride it out and at this price its very tempting...but then so is almost everything else. At the moment Albas share price is not top of my list of concerns
Two weeks ago if you left out of your seat and choked her out that would have made the news as a grave hate crime, now its a pre-emptive strike. Haha!
True Nookie. Barely any point commenting on the share price at the moment, every company has plummeted and as you say, some things are more important that whether you are up or down on any given day. Still amazes me how scruffy people are, still people not washing their hands after going to the toilet, coughing everywhere without covering their mouths. It also seems that we are indeed moving towards a cashless society, with toilet roll being the currency of choice. Regardless of differing opinions etc, GLA.
So my 'investment case' for this is that HH is almost in production, and when cash starts flowing Albas way that substantially de-risks this share and makes it worth many multiples of its current price. That is actually happening, as per Mullins regular updates (thank you). The Illmenite and graphite actually exists, albeit in an area that will take some work to bring it into production. Both are sought after so the chances of somebody taking an interest are not so remote. Finally the gold, which I am more sceptical about personally because if the grades were so good why did Stella sell up so readily and at such a low price? Legacy mines being the opportunity for speedy production, but again why did Stella sell rather than approach a partner...a mystery. There could well be significant gold mineralisation in the area and finding it would be huge (look at how much people put into Syrius, never produced anything and if anything potash is currently over supplied). Long story short, from here HH is close, greenland may happen, gold a longer shot but success with any should see the share price way higher than it is currently. Current market conditions though we could find a multi million ounce reserve and probs only move a fraction. People always talk about the ever decreasing share price...the value of the company has not changed from yesterday or the day before...we have had no bad news. Everything remains positive, people sell when they sell and the share price goes down accordingly. Its a theoretical loss until the point when you actually sell
Sadly true Ian67. I am used to seeing my Alba holding dwindling in value but usually my less speculative shares, crypto and investment trusts have done well. Everything is flat at the moment and with the current panic will probably get a lot worse before it gets better. Anybody would think that in the post covid world people won't need pharmaceuticals, phones, houses etc. Haha
Wow. Haha! There seamed to be similar tinkering to what Alba has done since...then they sold up so assuming it wasn't profitable at the time, and Stella changed name and direction. To be fair I was always a little sceptical about the gold because its yet to be found in any significant quantity. Be great if they find vast reserves in the Welsh hills but I am not yet betting the house. Haha! Its Greenland and Horse Hill where the action is in my own humble opinion, increase the defined resource and get a big partner on board capable of mining it. Here's hoping...
You beet me to it cp52
Must admit this sparked my interest, if previous assey results have returned good grades then you would have thought Stella would have acted on it themselves and Alba would have used this info. Its curious...
