Plethora Solutions expects offers from at least six pharma companies to licence a drug in the US for premature ejaculation, according to the company founder, who helped develop and market Pfizers Viagra, Bloomberg reports.
Discussions are approaching term-sheet stage with three of the international drug makers, which sell sexual health or testosterone-replacement products, said Michael Wyllie, the companys CSO. A licensing agreement will probably be reached before the company submits the drug, called Fortacin, to US regulators late next year, he said.
Fortacin uses the same active ingredients as AstraZenecas Emla cream, an anaesthetic that is used off-label for premature ejaculation, Wyllie said. Anti-depressants such as Zoloft and Prozac are also used for the same purpose, given their sexual dysfunction side effects, suggesting a large unmet need, he said.
This could be as big as Viagra, Wyllie said in an interview in London today. Id be surprised if we had not decided on an agreement by this time next year. Plethora is also open to offers to acquire the company outright, he said.
The companys shares rose six per cent to 6.6 pence in London, paring the decline this year to 48 per cent. Plethora has no products on the market and is valued at GBP45 million ($70 million). Fortacin was approved by European regulators in November 2013. Its not for sale yet as Plethora awaits approval for a six-dose canister that the company plans to market for EUR50 ($62) to EUR60, Wyllie said.
The drug will be available by prescription only, which will secure its branding image and higher price compared with OTC products, he said.
