I assume the reason living wage is so much higher than pensions is that you have more costs in your early life, like buying a house, having children, saving into a pension pot etc. that most pensioners do not have. Also, state pension is not sole source of income for pensioners, as some have private pensions or property/investment income. A pensioner couple will both have pensions, but not all working families will have both in full-time employment, especially when children are young. Finally, pensioners can go out an get a job if they want to, where they too would benefit from higher wages. The NI decision last year was a terrible one for business, and this budget hasn't been great either, so there's enough to criticise without pointing out disparities that actually make sense.
