RE: US FUNDING/GRANT17 Feb 2026 16:38
USTDA focuses on early-stage project prep, funding things like feasibility studies, technical and environmental assessments, and front-end planning—not building mines or full infrastructure.
Across all sectors, their average grant is around $400,000, usually for small scoping or desk studies. In the critical minerals space, they’ve supported larger feasibility studies, sometimes in the $1–$1.5 million range. Mining project studies can cost several million dollars to complete and help de-risk projects for investors, so USTDA grants for these studies reflect that scale.
For a rare earths project, estimated USTDA support could be:
Lower end: around $1 million for a moderate technical or feasibility study
Mid range: about $2 million, often assumed when exact figures aren’t disclosed
Upper end: $3 million or more for larger, more detailed studies including environmental reports and engineering assessments
Earlier USTDA‑style supported projects
Metalex Africa Zambia – received funding for a feasibility study to expand the Kazozu copper and cobalt mine in Zambia, with the grant around US$1.4 million.
Eramen Minerals Inc. – received a grant to support a feasibility study for a nickel and cobalt processing facility in the Philippines, reported at approximately US$5 million.
