RE: Miliband to plough £ hundreds of millions into battery storage technology29 Jul 2025 10:47
... EU gas storage has surpassed 65% capacity, moving toward its 80% target by November 1. However, the UK faces challenges, as its storage capacity remains limited. Centrica may produce gas from the Rough facility this winter instead of storing it, citing unsustainable losses. Rough, which holds half of the UK's storage, remains empty and may shut after 2025 without government aid. The UK currently has just 12 days of winter gas demand in storage, far less than EU countries. A £2 billion upgrade is under discussion, but weak market conditions and falling North Sea output are adding pressure. As a result, the UK remains heavily reliant on gas imports from Norway, the continental shelf, and global LNG suppliers.
