New TalkTalk company to build broadband network in north of England
TalkTalk has created a new company to invest in expanding its full fibre network despite an agreement with financial investor Infracapital falling through. The broadband company has formed a new company called FibreNation that will own its full fibre network in York. It will expand that network to nearby towns Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough to grow its footprint to 100,000 houses within 18 months. That is a long way short of the 3m homes it envisioned when it announced plans in February to form a new £1.5bn joint venture company with Infracapital, M&G Prudential’s infrastructure fund, to target full fibre investment. Those talks fell away due to disagreements over the value of the York network according to people with direct knowledge of the situation. TalkTalk said it remains in negotiations with investors, including Infracapital, over a new deal. The company’s shares fell by more than 6 per cent at open. Charles Bligh, the TalkTalk veteran who was leading the push to form a new fibre company has left the company and will be replaced by Neil McArthur who was the founder of Opal Telecom, TalkTalk’s business unit. The change in strategy was announced alongside first half results that showed customer growth doubling to 104,000 new users taking its base to 4.2m. Revenue in the period fell 0.6 per cent to £882m after it pulled out of its mobile brand with growth of 3.9 per cent excluding those factors. It reported a loss before tax of £4m compared to £95m in the first half of the previous year. The company said that it will move its headquarters to Salford meaning hundreds of staff will relocate. Tristia Harrison, chief executive of TalkTalk, said: “This has been a strong first half for TalkTalk, with continued broadband base growth and further progress as we become a simpler, more efficient business.”
