Our "Entrepreneur of the Month," Sir Martin Sorrell, is one of the world's leading communications figures and an oft-quoted commentator on business and economics.
Since 1975 he has made strategic acquisitions in several companies, earning the nickname The King of hashtag#Publicidad.
In this post, we'll look at some key acquisitions that Sir Martin has made and how they've contributed to the success of several companies.
1975-1984: Saatchi & Saatchi
πΈ Sir Martin joined Saatchi & Saatchi in 1975 and was Group Chief Financial Officer from 1977 to 1984.
Often referred to as "the third brother," he designed and carried out Saatchi's then-legendary agency acquisitions.
Sorrell undertook this by perfecting the practice of "earn-out."
1985-2018 WPP and the "Below the Line" Strategy
In 1985, Sir Martin privately invested in Wire Plastic Products, WPP, a British manufacturer of wire shopping baskets.
π WPP is considered the driving force behind the period of consolidation that has taken place in the communication sector over the last fifteen years.
His WPP group has created the world's largest media buying group, GroupM.
Together with creative agency networks JWT, Ogilvy and Mather, Young & Rubicam and Grey, WPP is one of the top three players in the global advertising market.
π The Sir Martin strategy is known as "below the line" advertising. Sorrell set about building a portfolio of businesses in less glamorous industries, such as real estate and sales promotion, most recently acquiring 18 in three years.
βοΈ In 1987 he stunned the agency world with a "hostile" acquisition of J. Walter Thompson for $566 million.
βοΈ Sorrell followed in 1989 with another spectacular hostile takeover of Ogilvy and Mather for $825 million.
π° Since 2000, WPP has also acquired two other integrated global agency networks, Young & Rubicam Brands for $4.7 billion and Grey for $1.309 billion.
Expansion of S4 Capital
π Sir Martin is the founder and executive chairman of S4Capital, a technology-led hashtag#marketing and hashtag#publicidaddigital services company.
In 2018, S4Capital merged with MediaMonks, the world's largest Dutch creative digital production company, for β¬300 million and then with MightyHive.
π These mergers created a unified company that combines creative digital content, digital media, and technology services.
In August 2021, S4Capital launched its unitary brand, Media.Monks, which now employs more than 8000 people in 32 countries and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Our "Entrepreneur of the Month" is one of the world's most respected business voices.
In the next post we will look at some appointments of Sir Martin and
