Boris Johnson is resolutely opposed to fracking and is open to onshore wind farms only if communities want them, The Times has been told.
The government’s energy strategy, which will be published within the next fortnight, will include commitments to review the moratoriums on fracking and onshore wind. The prime minister “does not want fracking anywhere in the country”, despite the government saying it would review the temporary ban, a source said. Johnson is also said to be particularly concerned about the risk of earthquakes. However, he remains open to onshore wind. “He wants to look at onshore wind but the truth is that there’s a lot of people hostile to it,” a source said. “He’s persuadable if the local population want it, and we’re looking at ways that can be achieved.” The prime minister faces a cabinet revolt over plans to relax planning rules to allow more onshore wind farms in England.
