the 51% rule only came in when Tony Benn founded Britoil as a copy of Statoil in the mid '70's. Before that there was no minimum Govt stake and no Govt back-in. Britoil had a right (but not a duty) to back in for 515 but only on licences awarded . A mate of mine was in a meeting in London the morning after Mrs T was elected and the BP guys told the Britoil guys they were now toast and could f*** off

This is complete nonsense - the N Sea occurred because Shell looked at some old wells drilled in Germany and decided there might be gas under N Holland - which they found - exploration there shifted offshore. The UK had the same geology and so licenced the acreage in the S N Sea. Oil was eventually found in the Norwegian N Sea by Phillips (a US Company) -see the Norwegian drama series that was on TV last year - and by Hamilton ( a US company)

The UK Govt never put in a penny, ever. They've taken a lot of cash out tho'.

he's no fool and I've heard he's a sight better than some other AIM CEO's - but he has to be careful about making promises. You just have to look over at HUR to see a large group of small investors who are intent on suing the previous (and some of the current management) for a long list of alleged crimes relating to public statements .

That is the whole point of reserves - as it says in the good book you slat it away when you can and use it when you need to . And buying when the price is low actually helps the oil companies at that time - no-one else may be buying
