it doesn't - its fixed for several months at the same rate and then changes to a another defined rate - it has no relation to paying off the loan. It does decline with time

It could of course - read GreyPanthers posts of the geology and the difficulty of targeting wells here. They could open the choke and find they have no more gas than they had at abandonment - in which case it 's a non goer anyway. OPEX and financing costs will make it non economic - and not meeting the hedge just means it won't be GL's problem

Also note this case was 2016 - I'm sure anyone offering a hedge afterwards was aware of the case and wrote the contract to avoid the issues dealt with here

The issue here was that the hedge was between two parts of RBS and they could charge the loss onto the client. it was "internal" hedging. In external cases (the other case mentioned) the holder of the hedge was able to enforce payment

If it passes then they will need to raise cash to do it . Site prep will be 3 months and assuming they can get a decent rig they could be on site 5 months after PP is granted then 2 months to drill the well, 1 month to do a basic test so end Q1 2023. Then they have o decide if they need a long term test - (=waste another year) or drill an appraisal (almost certainly necessary after what happened at Godley Bridge) say drill by end 2023 . Possibly on production mid/late 2024 at the earliest.

not a hope - the best will be another test well maybe in the Midlands where there is little natural seismic activity compared to Lancs. that will be in late 2022/early 2023 and the studies after it will take 12 months. The BGS have to earn a crust as well you know
