Think the narrative would change from they never pay anything to suddenly all the bits they do pay.
Royalties,Rates,Income Tax, Div taxes, Corporation tax , etc.
It’s amazing how because it’s such big such sums, when BP claims the same allowances as everyone else gets it’s headline news

Not sure how it’s going to play out this winter.
Think there will be a lot of people desperate for heating oil etc, especially as currently everything seems to be conspiring against energy( eg droughts less hydro,no cooling for nuclear,no water in Rhine etc), makes you worry about a bad winter next.( people will die from the mess that’s been made).
Planning to do my bit against demand Destruction and holiday booked for end Oct

Think it will all depend on oil price.
If we get a rising oil price it might turn out easy, a falling oil price might just temp all the sellers who missed last high at £4.52 or thereabouts.
£4 this last time was so simple to break.
As to if it will hold if we break through, just keep bad news away and who knows.

Even excluding Gulf of Mexico debt.
BP will not be debt free in 2023.
It could be net debt free around then,but not debt free.
Gulf of Mexico debts are slowly becoming a less scary number now less than $13B still a huge number but getting close to half what it used to be.

I think the big untold story is the debt reduction.
It’s truly amazing how much has already been paid off.
Without the buybacks and 40% oil reduction ,this amount of debt reduction would have moved sp as obviously company future would have been more secure.
When net debt comes to a reasonable level possibly next year as Sekforde says the cash is then free for something else.
How about us?

I doubt they would ever give us it all as we obviously can’t be trusted with it ourselves.
My worry is if they don’t use it in buybacks they just buy someone expensively and waste it.
But I did say before that in the 90s a 1p increase in quarterly div resulted in £1 on sp within a year, so can you imagine what sp would be if we did get it all?
That’s short hand for it’s too early on Saturday morning to go and calculate it.

Just looked back and when you did similar analysis in April
market cap was $ 78B so that’s a $20B jump despite BP having spent probably $3B in buybacks in the time and I oil price being about $10 lower
You did predict this at the time as you suggested that market cap would rise due to inflation and buybacks and debt reduction.
It does all suggest that the market narrative for BP is slowly changing.
It would be nice to be seeing another $20 B increase by year end ,time will tell

Coming back a bit but still nearly 10% of 52 week high in America .
Pound V Dollar must have had big effect.

Was looking at the graph for last 5 years.
We are above 5 years ago currently but to keep being able to say that by October we need to be above £5.34 don’t know it that would make it any easier to get there.
Think £5 no longer seems impossible, but that’s usually when a non BP news item comes along and destroys the good work.

At the rate they are currently buying up shares they should be able to keep buy until the start of the next quarter. Then new funds would be released for the following quarter.
The 1 st and 2 nd quarter buybacks were front loaded and they did stop before end of quarter.

It’s actually been like nothing was priced in
Not the oil price
Not the war
Not the record profits
Not the buybacks
So on that basis is it the 10% increase in div that’s responsible for this movement in sp ?
If it was the reason that would give more reason to be hopeful of holding on to the gains

It feels different this time as the buybacks are just ticking along nicely.
I will be the first to concede that I thought it felt different last time as well so still time to just fizzle out.
Maybe this time the div increase will underpin sp.
I have said before in the 90s a 1 p div increase resulted in a £1 increase is sp within a year ( and it happened over 3 different years).
I’m always positive ( except when the drop from £4.52 happened).
