Would be nice to see a rotation into solid old economy stocks which produce something and pay a div.
Even my NG shares which I thought would be safe ish have taken a pounding last couple of weeks.
I still think oilers will become a safe haven( especially with the buybacks)
But there really are some bumps in the road ahead

BP p.l.c. (the "Company") announces that on 11 October 2022 it has purchased, in accordance with the authority granted by shareholders at the 2022 Annual General Meeting of the Company, a total of 11,966,451 of its ordinary shares of $0.25 each ("Shares") on the London Stock Exchange and Cboe (UK) as part of the buyback programme announced on 2 August 2022 (the "Programme") and as detailed below:
Highest price paid per Share (pence): 457.25
Lowest price paid per Share (pence): 447.05
Volume weighted average price paid per Share (pence): 452.5574

If it was simply profits, then sp with current profits would be much higher (especially with current oil prices).
Lack of profits definitely drives sp down.

Think if you are adding in the negatives
Which of the following lead to the destruction of the share price:-
1. Net Zero
2. Wind Farms
3. Solar Farms
You also then would need to add
4) slashing div.
5) very low and negative oil prices
6) lockdowns

Jakers that is the question and the answer may change even day to day.
Would say
1) oil price
2) investor confidence ( BP results)
3) buybacks
4) Economic factors
5) dividend ( at the moment, but this would move higher if raised)
But even I am not sure I would always pick in that order.
Think buybacks don’t drive. sp so much as provide a floor for sp.
Think div is not driving sp , but the 10% rise may have moved sp floor upwards.
A rising div definitely drives sp up (seen it historically)

Gallows humour does seem to work best at a time like this.
Not sure how the UK problems will play our for BP.
At least for now UK windfall tax is off the table.
Not sure if EU one will cost BP much.
US doing one will probably hurt BP most.
Would have hoped some of the volatility would have left markets after OPEC announcement but no such luck.
Hope we do not drift down now till results

Was hopeful we could stay above £4.50 till results day.
Crude oil need to start leading us back up.

In the great o/t times my claim to fame was working officially from
3 pm till 07:30 then back on again at 08:30 till 07:30 next day
That’s 16.5 hrs an hour off then 23 hrs .
Or 39.5 hrs out of 40.5 hrs.
Boss signed and never even asked.
Even better wages payed without any problem either

Baz that’s the way things were going by the time I left.
I used to come home and say I’ve got another job.
The unfortunate part was it was on top of everything you were already doing.
It came to the point you were expected to work on to finish, and if you were lucky you got your extra time back.
Over time was a thing of the past.

Even my share account has started paying interest after years of nothing.
Think it’s even a better rate than my savings bank account.
It’s almost like we are back to the 70/80s with interest and strikes etc.

What are your views on buybacks going forward.
Despite some of the negative views I have been very positive up till these prices.
If we ever get up to £5.50 I start to get a bit nervous as in the past buybacks at those prices tend to lead to value destruction.
I would like buybacks above £5.50 to be at a much lower level than now ( maybe about a quarter) with the excess cash diverted to div again
However the first problem is of course the journey up to £5.50

I have a theory that if we had spent buyback cash on Shell instead of BP we would have had a more positive outcome.
It’s impossible to prove but if we had bought 5% of Shell I think it would have been noticed.
Similarly with Shell buybacks think if they had used their cash to buy BP shares instead of their own it too would have produced a better outcome.
However the shares BP bought in the £2 now look a bargain.
Would be nice if in a year the ones bought for £3 looked similar

All I am really highlighting is that a couple of months ago we finally got above the 5 year ago figure for sp.
But since 5 years ago the sp was rising we have to continually rise just to stay there.
Even with the current rising sp we have again dropped below 5 years ago.
By next September we would have to get to £5.88 just to stand still on 5 years previously.
Share as you say currently has momentum hope that can continue.

So you can see % swings are very different although sp will translate to the same.
It also lets you see why US thinks BP is a bad investment as they are still 20% off where they were 5 years ago

Yes that was what I wished to examine.
How cheap BP was in US. due to dollar strength.
And how that was reflected back over the last 5 years.
I can see it makes a difference I just wondered how it looked.
In order to compare BP with Exxon and Chevron I would need to us BP ADR to prevent a £ v $ problem so I will have the data
