RE: Bad news on oil supply to come, (from Russia) in the very near future4 Nov 2022 21:12
The moment the crude stops being pumping through a pipeline funny things start to happen.
And that’s without worrying about the very low temperature of a Russian winter.
The first thing will probably be the water in the crude will drop out.
And since water injection is not unusual to maintain reservoir pressure water content can be several %.
This water will drop to bottom of pipe, then flow downhill to fill all low points.
The next thing to happen is the heavier parts of the crude will start to drop out.
The heavier crudes will have more of these.
Again they will flow down hill ( very slowly ) to low points where they will slowly get harder and harder.
In winter the water will freeze ,with obvious potential for burst pipes.
The heavier part of the crude will just get nearer totally solid.
It doesn’t take long before you have a major problem.
The whole pipeline system relies on the crude moving and conducting heat to the cold spots.
It’s hard enough to get back going again in summer.
In a Russian winter it may be impossible.
