Interesting piece in the Sunday Times about NFTs. Fairly balanced and concludes that the NFT market is moving from “avatar NTFs” to artwork. Irrespective of what the NFT is worth, the marketplace selling the NFT gets a cut when it’s sold, and if it’s sold multiple times, they get multiple revenue.

Rowe said he wasn’t just in it for the money, but was attracted to the sense of community: owners of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs get access to exclusive events.
Social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are looking into ways for users to display their NFTs. At the moment it’s not always possible to tell if a user actually owns the NFT they are using as their profile picture or not. Advocates argue that this is no different from being a modern art collector who displays the work they own in a gallery. You own it, but everyone else can see it. What matters for the art world is that with an NFT there is no doubt about a work’s provenance — on the blockchain you can see a whole list of previous owners and trace its sales history. Artists can programme certain benefits or conditions into their NFT artworks. For example, they can claim royalties from a work every time it is sold on to a new owner.
Despite a crash in the cryptomarket, the momentum behind NFT investing has continued. So far this year, investors have spent $42.7 billion dollars on NFTs.
“NFTs are not dead but may be going through a shuffling of sorts. When market sentiment picks up, we may see the collections that recover strongest are those that are more than simple avatar pictures.”
He views NFTs as an extension of the traditional art market and so is confident that buying artwork with the help of a gallery will allow him to multiply his wealth. “If you get involved in the world of crypto and decide to invest quite heavily, as I did, you have to accept that it is extremely volatile and hard to predict,” he said. “If you choose carefully and choose artworks or NFTs based on rarity, they can only go one way.”
