It is a pity accountants are unable to write in plain English. These accounts need a one-page summary of the principal events, with a one-paragraph update of recent and current developments. The last line should state current profitability. Is that too much to ask?

Some very odd trading today, considering there is probably a substantial milestone payment coming soon. Question: Given there is a milestone coming, is it possible SAR might nevertheless go for an early placing? Answer: Unfortunately, yes.

I certainly hope you are on to something. But it may just be the usual SAR tendency to slide after any slight rise.

For comparison, SAR is valued today at just £25m.

Dreadful half year results recently from Johnstone Press. My Dublin newsagent tells me paper sales are still sliding.

Phoenix magazine says Stephen Rae is leaving his position as editor-in-chief because he was told further cuts were required, which he could not in conscience accept. If true that is a serious reflection on whoever is calling the shots. Rae is an excellent manager and a well respected journalist. INM can ill afford to lose him.

In my opinion the company has no option but to go with the Iran deal. Without it, they will never make a profit and will surely go broke in due course. Whether the executive has the balls for it, is another matter. Chairman Toby won't want to be shut out of the States.

Stephen Rae's departure confirmed, apparently by his own decision. And Denis O'Brien's associate Paul Connolly is leaving the board. Looks as if the wheels are coming off.
