I see BBC are picking up (in Top 10 reads today) that FT are tipping that Chancellor will name free ports tomorrow. Think an earlier message today mentioned freeports.

If shipping fell into UK climate targets maybe there might be overhaul work required to make shipping vessels compliant.

Maritime businesses and professionals from across the UK and the world are being invited to hear the Government and industry’s latest thinking on the future of the UK’s shipbuilding strategy at this year’s Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) annual conference, due to be held virtually on March 16 and 17.

We will examine the pipeline of work from all key programmes, which offer significant opportunities to UK industry over the next 15 years. Importantly, we will hear how the thinking behind the strategy has grown in scope to include not only naval ships but also all ships built for the UK Government. This includes commercial vessels such as ferries and research ships as well as workboats and amphibious craft.”

However, before public bodies – Highlands and Islands Enterprise in the case of Arnish – sign over the leases, one might reasonably hope for assurances that InfraStrata have firm prospects of work for the yards, as well as a shrewd eye for cheap deals and historic names.

As the Action for Arnish campaign group on Lewis said: “The company refers to future opportunities relating to offshore wind. That is welcome. However, that work will take time to materialise and we hope immediate prospects for the yard will depend on a more diverse portfolio of opportunities. There have to be safeguards against a repeat of BiFab”.
The likelihood is that InfraStrata’s plans will ultimately depend on the strength of commitment in terms of public policy and public investment. If the Scottish Government and its agencies decide to lease the yards to InfraStrata, they must also ensure that they are not simply creating another false dawn.
