Around 50% of our gas comes from the North Sea but we as a country do not benefit from our own gas reserves. We pay the same for our own gas as we do gas from anywhere else in the world. It's ridiculous.

Other countries seem to do better than the UK with their nationalised companies. Here our politicians prefer to see personal profit and have deliberately sought to run down our nationalised industries as an excuse for privatisation. Train fares in Germany are far less than those in the UK because of nationalisation and the funneling of profit from their UK interests into their own services.

Jakers, the government of the last 13 years did not invest in our well known energy needs (as well as anything else for that matter). We all know BP. are in the business to make profit (we also know our Director has stated he's making more than enough & that a windfall tax wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference to his plans to invest in the UK). The UK need not 'always be in debt' at all (unfortunately our governments have made damned certain we will be for generations to come however).

Apologies for labouring the point (excuse the pun) but i would say the argument is that it is energy which is costing us and that it is the energy companies profiting from that market.

You don't need to reiterate the history of BP. to me. We should not be in this situation as a nation. I fully realise it is not the fault of BP. It is the result of poor leadership. BP. can afford to pay a windfall tax and they have stated so. A sharing of the burden would have been a far better policy. The nation is in debt up to it's eyeballs and that is not good for any of us.

My posts are comments on the situation. It is the politicians that have lead us here no matter what side you are on politically, facts are facts. To disregard the politics is laughable quite frankly.

Why 'punish' the people for the Governments' shortsighted energy policies? The government should be working for the good of the people. If that means a windfall tax on energy companies that can easily afford it then so be it. Unfortunately the government of the last 13 years are reactive, not pro active. Labour gave the go ahead for the building of nuclear power plants in 2009 BTW.

I own BP. shares as well as shares in other energy companies but i really don't believe that handing these energy companies billions of pounds of tax payers money and lumping even more debt on the country for decades to come is the right way to go about solving this crisis.

There should be a windfall tax for the good of the NATION.
