Dorfan,
If I may?
I will entertain you with a true story.
As a very young manager in my twenties, on my first line management job with a team of 45 technicians reporting me and 4 charge hands to help me manage all the disciplines.
We were working shifts. On our off time there were a lot of activities with team mates.
Anything from golf, darts, skittles, bowls you name it we did it.
At these get togethers with wives and girlfriends etc, we use to have a few pints and bites.
I had, as a manager, been allocated a social budget.
Instead of paying each individually, I thought as a fresh wet behind the ears guardian reading manager that my budget could pay for this. I could do as I wish.
So I made providing FREE refreshment and NIBBLES a norm.
I immediately noticed the half drunk pints, whisky and lemonade etc.
The plates piled high with half eaten sandwiches.
I hated waste and still do. I am now in my eighties.
I discussed this over weeks with my charge hands.
The conclusion was that anything that is "FREE" is not perceived as being valuable , is abused mercilessly.
As it was my decision and prerogative, I announced a 25p charge for any drink/nibble etc.
The result was so remarkable! No extra / half drunk pints, spare plate of sandwiches etc lying around.
I had my first managerial lesson.
Any thing labelled free WILL be completely and mercilessly abused. You MUST make a charge at point of use not free at point of use!
Has stood me in good stead in my career of many decades.
Someone should tell the politicians. Maybe they can run a pilot scheme?
That would be too much to ask of *** people.
