OVO Invitation - SMETS221 Mar 2019 13:32
Just received this:-
Hello
If you’d like, you can have smart meters installed as part of a Government plan to have these new meters fitted in most homes by 2020.
We are currently installing our second generation of smart meter. It is called the S2 or SMETS2 and will be able to communicate with all suppliers.
These new meters have the highest standard of security for householder data (even better than the S1 meters) and use encrypted data that can only be read by the receiving supplier and are all developed by GCHQ.
There are strict new regulations and codes of practice regulated by Ofgem to keep smart meter data private. In fact, all of your personal data is safeguarded by the Data Protection Act.
Your new meter will automatically submit your meter readings to us, which means bills will be consistently accurate rather than estimated.
You will also be able to see how much energy different appliances use, which can help you to cut down what you are spending.
The main reason why it is a government incentive to install 80% of households by 2020 is efficiency. Looking at the bigger picture, this can help us buy our energy as a supplier a lot more efficiently, preventing less wastage which then helps us on our journey to reduce our carbon footprint.
We’ve put together some additional information below to explain what smart meters are, and to help you decide if you’d like to get them installed.
Thanks,
The OVO Team
