COVID-19 Delta variant cases rise 91% among fully vaccinated in Los Angeles County - CDC
According to the latest update by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some 25% of COVID-19 infections among Los Angeles County residents occurred in fully vaccinated people from May through July 25.
Among fully vaccinated persons on July 25, 55.2% had received the Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) - BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX) vaccine, 28.0% received Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) jab, and 16.8% had received Johnson & Johnson's (NYSE:JNJ) shot.
The new data involved 43,127 reported infections among Los Angeles County residents aged ?16 years.
Of them, 10,895, or 25.3%, occurred in fully vaccinated persons; 1,431, or 3.3%, were in partially vaccinated persons, and 30,801, or 71.4%, were in unvaccinated individuals.
During May 1–July 25, the percentages of Delta variant infections estimated from 6,752 samples increased from 8.6% to 91.2% in fully vaccinated persons, from 0% to 88.1% in partially vaccinated persons, and from 8.2% to 87.1% in unvaccinated persons.
However, vaccines did protect individuals from more severe cases.
According to the study, much lower percentages of fully vaccinated persons were hospitalized (3.2%), admitted to ICU (0.5%), and required mechanical ventilation (0.2%) compared with partially vaccinated persons (6.2%, 1.0%, and 0.3%, respectively) and unvaccinated persons (7.6%, 1.5%, and 0.5%, respectively).
In July, when the Delta variant was predominant, cycle threshold values were similar for unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, and vaccinated persons.
In addition to the LA County data, the CDC released an update on the HEROES-RECOVER cohort study among healthcare workers that showed a significant drop in vaccine effectiveness among vaccinated frontline workers in eight states.
Vaccine efficacy during the Delta predominant period fell to 66% from 91% in 4,217 participants before the dominance of the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant.
Recently, CDC reported that unvaccinated individuals are 29X more likely to get hospitalized with COVID-19
