WA FIFO industry faces disruption as the state government cancels flights out of Perth after the coronavirus leaked out of hotel quarantine sparking a 5-day lockdown of the city.
Flights from Perth to the Pilbara were cancelled for the week.
While BHP , RIO & FMG working through the details of the movement restrictions on Sunday, flights due to carry workers from Perth to remote mining camps and towns have been cancelled, and mining companies are believed to be asking employees currently on site to extend their rosters until Friday.
restrictions only apply to residents of Perth and the state’s South West so, in addition to workers who elect to extend current shifts, miners will still have access to workers who live near mining centres and those who are able to fly in from other regional centres, such as Geraldton and Kalgoorlie.
Depending on early testing , we are hoping for relaxed rules for FIFO workers towards the end of the week, allowing employees to return to site under existing protocols - including mandatory testing before they travel.
We’ve seen WA regularly close its borders to FIFO workers as outbreaks hit other states, the big mining companies have largely moved their workforces to WA to ensure the continuity of supply during this record iron ore and gold market.
This is a double hit for the Pilbara Ports as they began clearing the harbours at Port Hedland and Dampier and Port Hedland on Saturday, sending ore carriers out to deeper anchorages before the expected arrival of high winds and heavy rains as a cyclone approaches.
