I don't know answer it would seem reasonable if being taxed as income that up could treat it as income for pension investment purposes. But I don't know and would suggest that would be a question to put to your pension provider.

You need remove 30000 and your personal allowance 12000 odd from the total income in the tax year. That will give you the amount subject to tax - if within 20 % band then will be at 20 %

I tend to agree that financial advisers are expensive and not always value for money

But if in doubt perhaps ask friends to recommend an accountant local to you.

Would suggest if real concern hundred or two hundred pound they might charge not a lot if helps you

Failing that there is a remote possibility that your HR department could help.

First 12570 tax free then up to 50270 is 20 %. Above that 40 %. This is per tax year not per calandar year.

If the payment to leave is redundancy then usually first 30000 tax free and balance above added to other income in the tax year.

So on your example assuming the payment to leave is redundancy and not some special leaving incentive

Then you have 75000 income of which 30000 (redundancy allowance tax free) 12570 (personal allowance tax free) leaving balance approx 33000 at 20 %

But I not financial adviser so suggest check gov. Uk as this is just my understanding

This all works on premise you have no other income (savings interest dividends etc)

Also no taxable capital gains

Ideally you ought to have a meeting with a financial adviser

Like you I see many challenges ahead

My approach is simple at 1.5p downside modest - in event of all go wrong. Upside several times more.

Fully accept can go either way if goes bump disappointing but will not upset me too much. Price I will have paid for potential upside and an interest in a development on the Island
