There has been a lot of understandable concern linking the recent share price weakness to the Ofgem investigation and the large Schroders sale. However, a forensic look at the public filings proves this narrative is incorrect. The selling was not triggered by Ofgem; it was the result of a major fund closure or a large client liquidation at Schroders that had nothing to do with Capita specifically.

The key is the timeline.

The Ofgem RNS was released on July 23rd. The Schroders TR-1 filing clearly states their sale transaction date was July 3rd—a full 20 days before the Ofgem news broke. This proves the Ofgem announcement could not have been the trigger for the sale.

So, what was the real cause? The evidence points to a systemic, portfolio-wide event. The proof is in the identical, delayed filings Schroders made for other major UK companies:

TP ICAP Group plc: Schroders filed a late RNS showing a sale on the exact same day, July 3rd.

Balfour Beatty PLC: Another late Schroders filing, another sale on July 3rd.

Just Group PLC: Same pattern, same transaction date.

In all cases, the reason given was the same: a client action combined with a "system update" failure at Schroders.

This pattern proves beyond any reasonable doubt that the selling was part of a much larger action. Capita was simply one of many holdings that had to be liquidated due to a Schroders client decision. It was not a vote of no confidence in Capita's turnaround; it was the result of an external event and a subsequent administrative failure at Schroders.

The market has incorrectly linked two separate events and punished the share price based on a false premise. The prolonged selling pressure throughout July and the subsequent drop were caused by a technical event, not a fundamental failure at Capita.
