Demand will absolutely rocket9 Feb 2026 17:33
Just for discussion purpose only…
Cinovec at 37 ktpa: what would VW (or a similar offtaker) need?
1) Lithium required per EV
A typical battery-electric passenger car uses roughly 8–10 kg of lithium metal in its battery, depending on battery size and chemistry.
A reasonable planning assumption is ~9.5 kg lithium per EV.
That equals 0.0095 tonnes of lithium per car.
2) How many EVs could 37 ktpa support?
If Cinovec produced 37,000 tonnes of lithium per year (lithium content): 37,000 ÷ 0.0095 ≈ 3.9 million EVs per year
So, in simple terms, Cinovec at 37 ktpa could theoretically supply lithium for about 4 million electric cars annually, assuming: all production goes to EV batteries, no losses in conversion, no allocation to grid storage, consumer electronics, etc.
3) How big is EU EV demand?
By around 2030, Europe is widely expected to produce well over 10 million EVs per year across all manufacturers.
At ~9.5 kg lithium per EV, that implies EU lithium demand of roughly:
95,000–110,000 tonnes of lithium per year
That puts Cinovec’s 37 ktpa at roughly: 30–40% of total EU EV lithium demand, depending on the scenario.
It is a very meaningful supply, but not sufficient on its own.
4) What this means specifically for VW
Volkswagen Group targets several million EVs per year in Europe this decade.
Indicative figures:
• 1 million EVs/year → ~9.5 kt lithium
• 2 million EVs/year → ~19 kt lithium
• 4 million EVs/year → ~38 kt lithium
So: If VW were producing ~2 million EVs per year in Europe, Cinovec could theoretically cover about half of VW’s lithium needs. If VW reached ~4 million EVs per year, one project like Cinovec would be almost entirely consumed by VW alone.
In practice, VW would still diversify supply across multiple mines, refiners, and recyclers for risk and pricing reasons.
5) Bottom line -37 ktpa lithium ≈ batteries for ~4 million EVs per year .That is strategic scale for Europe, but not enough to supply the whole EU market. For a single large offtaker like VW, Cinovec could be: a cornerstone supply asset
Of course there’s a very long list of corporations who also need this deposit…… bids anyone?
