Major Lithium Processing Plant Approved for Prunéřov, Backed by State Subsidy
The Czech government has officially approved a subsidy of up to 8.8 billion CZK to support the construction of a new lithium-processing plant in Prunéřov. The project, led by Geomet, a company within the ČEZ group, is expected to cost over 25 billion CZK in total.
The new facility will process lithium extracted from ore from the Cínovec deposit in the Ore Mountains — one of Europe’s largest known lithium resources. The project has also been recognized by the European Commission as a strategic investment for the EU, reflecting lithium’s growing importance for battery production and the broader transition to electric mobility.
According to project estimates, the plant could create around 2,000 direct jobs, with another 2,000 indirect jobs expected in supporting industries and services. For the Chomutov region, this represents one of the most significant industrial investments in recent years, potentially transforming the local economy.
The state subsidy will be used strictly for investment costs related to the construction and technological setup of the plant. If all proceeds as planned, Prunéřov could become a key hub for lithium processing in Central Europe, contributing to both national and EU-level energy and industrial strategies.
