Cut dependency on imported products, PM Hasina urges countrymen
The prime minister stressed on intensifying production in Bangladesh
STOP IMPORTING DIRTY COAL FROM INDIA THEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have never visited the country, so I am far less informed than some. But from what I read, the local farmers and other who would need relocating are far less opposed to this project than they were when the riots took place. I believe the riots were stirred up at the time and they were not necessarily a true reflection of the local feeling. GCM has a well published proposal for the relocation packages and for how they will look after the communities. Give the lack of power to many rural communities, which is the most beneficial for them? Power availability and a move to a better area with compensation, or to stay put but have their well-being held back and even made worse due to the power shortages and lack of economic development for the country as a whole?
The truth is we don't really know. The Energy Minister seems to be pro-mining but until Hasina changes her stance, I doubt this really changes very much. It improves our chances, but on a scale of 1 - 10, I'd say we moved from 0.001 to 0.003. But as I opened with, I don't think any of us really know what, if anything, is being discussed with Sheikh Hasina.
I've been invested here and (sadly) Polo for way longer than I care to admit. Ive kind of written all these off (>£150k) but always knew they would either happen or not. Binary style. Hasina has maintained her stance that the establishment of a coal mine in the area close to the Sunderbans is not going to happen under her tenure as Head of Government. Unless she changes that, either by building an eco-energy empire which will utilise coal from Phulbari (but not merely the creation of a coal mine), or she is replaced by someone who does agree that they must replace expensive and environmentally poor imported coal, then movements in the sp will merely reflect press comments or speculation now the coal price has increased substantially. Either we mine our coal, or we don't. If we do, then the old members of this BB who warmed their ****les to the idea of a £10 party will resurface and celebrate big time (like I will) or we will continue to bat around speculation like this with newbies hoping to see a few pence improvement from 5p to 7p. Each to their own.
We lost one remarkable lady and leader of our proud nation yesterday. What will happen to the one who heads up Bangladesh over the coming months / years? It is only her that stands in the way of this investment reaping the fruits which long term shareholders deserve. Let's see.
As a politician, surely renaming it the Renewable Energy Territory or whatever it was the Chinese had invented, and making Phulbari only a part of it, she doesnt lose face with her stance 10 years ago saying it would never be mined whilst she was leader. Its her or Phulbari and she'd better act fast.
