This suggests he either hit it lucky or was riding on the coat tails of the more competent. One could argue that the deal he did at that point, if you look at the numbers, was far from premium from a shareholder perspective. (Although, ofc, he's sorted himself and mates out from a bonus/salary perspective in all deals he's made)

I would suggest therefore, that mining engineer's, such as Bird, also know nothing about " finance, marketing, and corporate strategy" either. Which, as you state, are ‘critical’ for running a successful company.
