Hi JC. Dawsons failing News business was picked up by Menzies and Smiths equally, with Menzies making big gains in the South East particularly. From a situation a few years ago when numerous News distributors were forced to cut margins to the bone to retain exclusive Publisher-granted distribution areas, nowadays it is virtually only Menzies and Smiths controlling the distribution for GB (and Menzies subsidiary EM News in Ireland) and they now call the shots, rather than the Publishers. Smiths currently have approximately 60% of the News distribution industry, and Menzies have the balance. Any attempt by either company to increase their footprint would almost certainly be blocked by the OFT.
Menzies Aviation, providing Airport services around the world, is doing exceptionally well, continuing to grow, and is pretty future-proof. The BOD and executives of both Aviation and Distribution are very canny operators,in keeping with their Scottish roots.
