An accurate reflection of what is going on TFE at the moment. Russia has amassed enormous currency reserves which will allow it to weather any sanctions imposed by the west. Putin has picked his moment carefully to prod a weak US President and disunited Europe. Fair play to him, whatever he has planned is causing total confusion and consternation.

Should pave the way for another rate rise, fingers crossed........

WW, different countries have different ways of helping out the consumers with their energy bills. Wholesale energy prices are not unique to the UK. Absolutely nothing to do with Brexit. How France helps their energy consumers is their business and is not an EU wide policy unless I'm mistaken. I know Remoaners like to blame Brexit for the weather but really....lol

Sadly the B of E's recent expertise at forecasting inflation has been dreadful. Either that or it has just thrown away its own rule book on the 2% target and ignored inflationary build up for a while now. Looking forward to a gentle rise in rates away from the ridiculously low threshold it has been at for far too long now......

The market makers were probably looking for the words "earnings substantially above previous guidance." They are going to be above £500m but by how much who knows ? The share has had a good run of late. Probably just taking a little break......

Small token rate rises are pointless. Some of us remember paying mortgage rates at over 12%. The world has gone mad if you ask me.

Likewise, I'd like to see a rise in rates to curb inflation which is starting to run away. I guess the Government understandably don't want to service the Covid debt at higher rates but we are storing up more and more trouble down the line by doing nothing. A quarter of a million more people in jobs last month indicates to me that the economy could tolerate a rise in rates.

I rather suspect the new variant concerns are being overplayed to distract from partygate at number 10 and this in turn is giving the BoE the excuse it needs not to raise rates.

I think the market panicked on Friday Asperger ! Hope I'm wrong but not enough testing has been done on this variant yet to merit talk of lockdowns etc. The current vaccines may yet be able to deal with it and no one has died from it yet (stand to be corrected). Bringing back mandatory mask-wearing is no bad thing and harms no one in the meantime. I can't quite square the circle however that you need to wear a mask in shops but not in pubs......lol

Whilst I had little time for Gordon Brown, I'm not sure you can level the minimum Premium Bond prize dropping to £25 at his door. Those in charge at NSI are more culpable I would imagine.....2 x £25 for me this month.

Lloyds makes most of its money still on interest charges on loans and mortgages. Higher rates will benefits the banks as they will make bigger margins. However base rates do no want to rise excessively such that firms go bust and people can't pay their mortgages. A modest rise in the base rate will be beneficial to Lloyds profits.

Not what I've been reading. The lenders have already started moving the cost of mortgages upwards in anticipation of higher interest rates.....
