That debate runs and runs across multiple boards. But the only people I've seen trying to include buybacks in their "total returns" are those sitting on capital losses, it's an exercise in self-denial to sugarcoat a bad bet.

Owning an infinitesimal larger amount of the company than you did at the beginning of the buyback programme is academic, particularly for small investors. The buybacks are a sneaky tool to boost EPS and director remuneration packages, it's in their report and they're not even trying to hide it.

At current O&G prices, FCF will be closer to $500m than $1bn for FY 2025. They used to do $2bn+ FCF with just a few hundred million net debt, share price was 400p+ back then. So now settling at a share price range of 150-200p with $4bn debt around your neck isn't anywhere near as crazy as people think it is.
