The panic is over and a lot of good yield stuff is going back up again, dam it, I knew I should have bought more when the panic was in full flow.

All seems very strange to me, Just did some online enquiries at my bank and it seems I would be far better off, if I needed to, to have a personal loan:- They offered me 6.5% for example on £20k to buy a car. Even the worse credit cards only charge 20% too so why would one even think of using an overdraft?

Don't think the market is overbought, if anything, it's the opposite. All of my present portfolio is showing very acceptable yields with just one little exception: I decided to go into a promising AIM stock a few months ago which has so far brought me a return of just over 50 % and another 3% today. Sorry no I ain't saying, you'll have to find yer own.

For those who are not minded to panic because there a slightly new 'flu in China, now is an opportunity to buy some stuff cheap and make a few bob. I almost suspect that there are powerful and rich people manipulating the media in order to create the panic which results in a lot of folk selling off perfectly good investments. I have seen it happen time and again in my now quite long life as a finance man.

Now just why would a dose of 'flu affect the banking sector? It doesn't usually in my experience. There are zillions of people in China and if the reports are anywhere near correct, so far it has killed just 80 people - not particularly unusual for a 'flu virus and most of them were probably old or had other health problems which weakened them. Well that is my estimation of the situation but of course, the media have a reputation for over stating almost any bad news, here is an example: "UK braced for Arctic blast" = It's the middle of winter and there could be a few inches of snow in Scotland and on high ground - not particularly unusual is it.

Can't really agree with that Oakie. Lloyds is basically a public utility although not nationalised. It provides a valuable service to many miilions of us and all we need besides that is regular acceptable return on our investment - where else would you get 5% or so on a regular basis from a safe and easily liquidated investment?

Well yes Falk and of course why not - where else can one get 5% for one's money from an almost 100% safe investment.

and why should they? We are constantly warned and advised what steps to take to avoid being scammed, I simply cannot understand why folk do not stop and think when large amounts of cash are involved. I myself was the target of an elaborate fraud attempt back in the summer using remote control of my own computer. Without going into details, they wanted me to sign in to my bank account because they could not find the passwords on my phone or my computer. At which point I remembered the advice from my bank -"never give your passwords to anybody" and told them to get lost.

Yes Wids, usually a sign that some or maybe one big investor is playing games in the absence of any other news.

CB, Don't think so matey, normal behaviour is SP to slowly creep up as we approach ex div date. Other good stocks are off today as well and will all come creeping back as we near month end.

BB thanks for that LOL but I know what it's like to be in a high pressure exec situation: I had a dose of nervous exhaustion in my early days and some hairy times as a financial controller before I retired.

BB you forget that LBG was on it's knees with a very large IOU from HMG unlike Nationwide, Coventry which are not essentially banks and operate to different rules (look it up). LBG is also a very large public utility and almost essential to the UK economy. He knew all that and took the job on which gave him some sleepless nights on his own admission, bet not many other people could have done it and sent the government's money back as quickly as he did. That's part of the trouble with this country, there are too many of us wanting to always give the successful a kicking.

Of course a lot of folk are not aware of just how much good stuff AHO has done for LBG, he is nobodies fool - look it up if you don't believe me.

Absolutely correct there LTI, as someone who is diagnosed with hypertension, claudication and glaucoma, even though I am rich compared to many, I would give a lot of it away to get rid of the health problems.

Up again falk, just some big boys messing about to get a cheap deal.... Actually I came in with some spare cash some months ago and could not believe the price at the time (268) for a solid outfit with a good yield. The market has a habit of being downright stupid at times as I have observed many times over the years. As Mr Buffet says, don't panic when the market slips a bit, that is often a time to invest well.

OXo need to get it right, in 2017 our net payment was 4.24 billion Euros (no where near 11 billion) which works out at roughly £1 per week per person (do the math) I don't think most of us are too bothered about £1 per week for belonging to a club which lets one travel all over the place and get free health treatment if necessary. This is the trouble, there are so many spurious comments made continually by ill informed folk who can't be bothered to drill into the true facts.

OK let's sort a few things out: 1. The CE mark is for our protection not to restrict trade - do you imagine that we will have nothing very similar in place when we leave? 2. "Trade with whom we want" did not come from any so called news source rather it was a direct quotation from Cornsland's post; where he got it from I don't know but I was simply pointing out that we already trade with all kinds of other countries without EU interference and when we leave we are most likely to replace EU tariffs with our own. Thus talk of EU tariffs as if they were some kind of trade restriction is disingenuous.

Know what you mean Faulkes, problem is they read the Daily Mail, etc., and believe all the trumped up rubbish by the likes of Faridge, Johnson , etc. "Trade with whom we want" - what a fatuous remark that is, we already do without any interference from the EU - I have a Korean car, several Chinese power tools, my daughter has a Japanese car and we buy South African and Australian wine - no "EU bureacrats" seem to be preventing such trade.

Quite right Stagey but the bank still makes money from substantial arrangement fees, etc., and with that kind of offer, their will be plenty of takers. Thus it is still a fallacy that one can get something for nothing. This is what a lot of "Islamic" banks do where it is against sharia law to earn usery (charge interest) - so they just charge fat fees for almost everything they do. This tends to lead to corruption which is common place in the middle east.
