I must say that I do not really understand the expression "too much exposure". When I was in business, my employer needed a regular supply of pure nickel and the price would fluctuate as is the case with all commodities. We were discussing this one day when I suggested that the next time we saw a significant drop, we should borrow a fe w quid and buy six months usage. Someone else said that could be "too much exposure" but we did it anyway at the first opportunity and made an additional £500,000 that year! Did we continue with that strategy? You bet!

Quite right Twonkers, Mr Buffet says don't buy a share that you are not prepared to hold for ten years also he doesn't believe in "quick" profits. He has also said that quick profits may give some satisfaction to those who seem to need instant gratification but they do not give medium to long term wealth accumulation. Thus I bought some shares in the AIM about ten years ago for £3k and despite upward movement I have kept them because I believed the company has a good model. Today they have a value of £15k = 500% over ten years, not bad eh?, wish I had put £10k in originally doh!

Noggers, Simple rule - never sell a rising stock. I made the mistake of doing just that this time last year and received £8k but I didn't really need the cash. Had I waited until the end of the year when the price levelled off and then sold I would have received £16k!!!!

Death is not a "disaster", in case you haven't noticed death is a fact for all of us. It's fear of death which is a disaster because people cease to think rationally when they are in fear and do stoopid things like selling perfectly good investments for less than they are worth. You had a pile of shares and now you have a pile of cash does that make the slightest difference to your life situation?

It seems to me that there is some very ropey thinking going on among some "nvestors". Just because a few people die and some businesses are shut down does not necessarily mean that people will buy less insurance. If anything some sectors of insurance will be more profitable than usual due to the lower level of claims. Lif assurance may loose out a teeny bit due to a few more deaths but life assurance pay outs are all inevitable anyway. I think that these matters may have dawned on some people because the shares of another insurance co which Invest in are almost back up to where they were pre-covid. Why L &G is still langushing with a yield of almost 9% is a complete mystery to me and I am about to buy a few more at this ridiculous price.

Fatcs are that DLG is a very competitive out fit and most people will not cancel their policies even though they are doing little motoring becuase they still want to go shopping but with much reduced claims they will have a pile of cash when this virus panic is finished in a few weeks time.

Yes and every recession in my now quite long lifetime has eventually recovered; there are two fundamental reasons for this which seem to escape a lot of thinkers: 1. People allways want enjoyment and entertainment and will spend money to get it. 2. People allways want to make profits (even a weekly wage is a profit) so that the can do No. 1

If you have any knowledge of market contractions over the past 30 odd years, you will know that the market always comes back after a crisis. How long this takes depends upon how politicians handle crisis situations. Some are useless and don't know what to do and others understand economics and get it right. So of the several crises which have occurred since and including 1987 the recovery periods have varied from 2 to 6 years but they have always happened eventually and so will this one.

Bronco, How do you know that they are not? The are not going to actually tell you are they if all they need to do is place a few buy orders.

No, we need to lose some of them, we have far too many MP.s and they cost us a packet. Most other countries get by with far less MP's and other hangers-on than we have to fork out for.

Brokers are not usually very good on financial advice, if they were they would all be multi-millionaires, being that close to markets. Mind you, financial advisers are not usually very good at it either although there are the odd one or two who have some decent experience under their hats. Every day thousands die of 'flu, malaria, pneumonia, cancer and heart disease and no-one panics. A new disease comes along which a few people die of and the media, because they love doing it, stoke up fear with the result that at least half the population, even though they mostly won't die, submits to temporary insanity. E.g. buying loads of toilet rolls and baked beans.

Never forget Paul that at least half of the human race statistically is of below average intelligence and that will include some on this website. The probable most successful investor in the world is an American called Warren Buffet, on his own admission he never invests in the short term in the hope making a quick buck. However, that is exactly what some of the swivel-eyed loons on this website try to do and fool themselves that they are doing something wonderful every time they make a few pennies and forget about all those times that they have done the opposite. My own most successful investment has occurred following the Buffet principle and holding it for around ten years; it has made roughly 500 percent so far.

Never yet met anyone who makes money out of bookies therefore SILLY. Actually years ago we had a syndicate in the office which always bet on the flat and at the end of the season we had made a profit of about 20%. The bookie didn't know that it was a syndicate because the same bloke always turned up to place our bets; at the start of the next season the bookie closed the account (what a surprise).

Of course part of the problem is that most of the population of this country have forgotten how to pray. I certainly do love it BB and have never believed that human activity contributes in a major way to climate change. The energy out put of the sun is truly massive compared with mankinds' feeble efforts. Think of this: The sun rises (well not really, we spin into it's radiation) and within two or three hours the temperature of around one third of the lower atmosphere of the planet rises by ten degrees. What we do just does not compare with that amount of power.

No banks are not down because of the virus, banks are down because when people are scared they cannot make logical decisions - adrenaline turns off higher brain functions, look it up. If you or anyone you know might die (scary) what difference does it make whether you have a pile of cash or a pile of shares? Answer - NONE, but due to folk memories from the distant past people felt safe if they had a pot of gold sovereigns under the bed. Even that was faulty though because you were more likely to be attacked and robbed if you had some.

When I was very small mother encouraged me to put some money into a Post Office savings account "because next year, you will have more". Of course she was right and I was slightly surprised that I had made a gain without any effort on my part. In the intervening 50 odd years NOTHING HAS CHANGED except that it's now better to put money into financial shares rather than the Post office because they pay more. A few hundred people will die, it happens all the time but the financials will still make money because they always do if managed correctly as most of them now are. Oh yes what happened in 2008? Quite simply, Gordon in his ignorance allowed some cowboys to operate one or two banks by relaxing the rules. It should be noted that same problem did not happen at the building societies because they are made to stick to rules by law.
