On the news this morning Turtles.....
Turtles can mistake plastic for food and eat it, which can cause intestinal blockages, ruptured organs, and starvation. Turtles can also feel full after eating plastic, even if they aren't, which can lead to death. According to a study by the University of the Sunshine Coast and CSIRO, a turtle has a 22% chance of dying after eating one piece of plastic, and a 50% chance of dying after eating 14 pieces.
Turtles are attracted to the smell of plastic, which is likely an evolutionary adaptation for finding food. However, once plastic is in the ocean, it's colonized by microbes, algae, plants, and tiny animals, which can make the smell even more appealing to turtles.
