RE: Budget 2021: Mortgage 5% Deposit27 Feb 2021 10:05
,2Daman - Thanks for another insightful post. The housing market in this country is totally dysfunctional; I keep waiting for the whole Ponzi scheme/house of cards to collapse, but governments continually find a way to artificially support the market as anything else is political suicide. Even relatively low (historically) interest rates of 3% or 4% would bring it all crashing down. I'm a holder here, I just hope I'm long gone before the """t eventually hits the fan.
I know that they are different beasts, but compared to where they were 12 months ago, just prior to the pandemic, Barclays is back to where it was, Natwest is down by about 4%, and Lloyds is down about 26%.
I like your(devious) thinking, and am well past the point of believing that there is any limit to which this, or indeed any other government, would go to gain advantage for themselves.
2Daman - More lyrical references (Paloma Faith obviously) - I love it! And very apposite. If you could work a bit of Springsteen into one of your posts, it would be much appreciated.
A fairly futile exercise, I must admit, but can't help wondering what difference it would have made to the Barclays/Lloyds share price if the money allocated to the share buyback had been spent on a larger dividend instead?
Jakito - The US markets were closed on Monday, so their rise yesterday/overnight was just a reflection of our rise on Monday, rather than a forward indicator.
Bibury is undoubtedly beautiful, but as you mention yourself, the hordes of tourists can somewhat spoil it. Loved the hobbit comment- very true. Your neighbour sounds like a lucky chap: don't suppose he needs an assistant? PS- if you ever find yourself in Sussex again, check out a village called Alfriston between Lewes and Eastbourne - fabulous, with 2 great pubs as well. I do love a cosy village boozer.
Triflepig - Lamb Inn is a 400 year old hotel/pub/restaurant on ( I kid you not) - Sheep street! Can't think of anything better on a cold winter day like today than sitting with a pint (or two) by the fire in a cosy pub. God only knows when (if?) that will be possible again. Like you said - what a waste. PS - I was more Lewes area in Sussex, but used to work at Gatwick, and recall a couple of cracking pubs in Rusper.
Highveld- just reading back through some posts, and have to say I endorse your thoughts about Burford/Lechlade etc - beautiful around there. Are you familiar with the Lamb Inn in Burford? Absolutely gorgeous, and one of my favourite pubs in the whole country - behind only a handful of places in Sussex, which is officially (in my humble opinion) pub paradise. Or at least it was until Covid f""""d it up. Not sure some of those places will survive or ever be the same if they do. Very depressing.
