RE: Omicron has changed the shape of the pandemic. Will it end it for good?22 Jan 2022 13:53
Encouraging news, obviously. However, as I was saying a few days ago, we seem to lurch from one crisis to another lately. The 5G thing came out of nowhere, although seems to have gone away, at least temporarily. Then there's the Ukraine/Russia situation, which is casting a large shadow over the markets just now. Even if that gets resolved, you have spiralling fuel costs and rising taxes helping to push inflation higher and bringing a cost of living crisis. Higher fuel costs are, of course, of particular concern to airlines. Higher interest rates might be tempting to help squash inflation, but bring a whole set of other problems, especially to a highly leveraged population. A sizeable rise in interest rates would cause massive problems for a lot of people who mortgaged themselves to the hilt to get on our Ponzi-style housing ladder, and are politically unpopular (I know the B of E is supposed to be independent, but still..). Then there's China, climate change, ongoing Brexit issues, and a range of other problems too extensive to go into here.
Anyway, maybe I am being overly pessimistic, but after a bright start to the year, I am having a few sleepless nights contemplating my investments - the main ones being here and Lloyds bank. Even as Covid (hopefully) recedes, I still foresee a turbulent time ahead. Still - he who dares, wins. Or goes bankrupt.
Here's hoping I am proved emphatically wrong.
