You're making quite a few assumptions there:-
1) If Scancell wanted/needed an extra £5m or £10m then they would have asked for it - they didn't. They requested the amount they needed to complete preclinical development and initiate phase I trials and that's what they got. They can and I'm sure will apply for follow on funding as and when it's required, just as Oxford did.
2) You have no way of knowing whether extra staff would have helped speed up development - it appears that timescales are being driven by manufacture and development of the delivery system, both of which are being carried out by other parties.
3) Regarding timescales - agree, it took a while but they were following the same UKRI application procedure and subject to review by an independent panel of experts, just like everyone else.
4) Scancell didn't have to bring out the begging bowl for the Sky interview- that was down to David Evans
5) Of course there wasn't the same level of urgency, Scancell announced from outset that this would be a second generation vaccine. Having said that, you don't know when they applied but the longest it can have taken is 4 months from application to allocation of funds. We know for certain that UKRI had to go back with some queries and in terms of how long these applications usually take, 4 months is actually very quick.
6) No, Scancell could never have matched the scale and speed of development of BioNTech , not in a million years. I'm happy to explain why if you want.
7) Your views on the Government, how they have wasted money etc. are irrelevant in the context of this debate (although I happen to agree with you). The process for applying for and allocation of these funds was down to UKRI, not Boris Johnson
IMO The UKRI funding award was a great achievement for Scancell as well as recognition of Lindy Durrant's expertise. These posts which suggest Scancell have somehow been short changed or treated as a second class candidate by the Gov. fail to recognise that - don't forget Scancell were awarded more or less the same amount as Oxford received at the same stage. They did brilliantly to get such a large award and hopefully preclinical development of Covidity will go well and they'll be in a position to apply for more.
