Bacanora Lithium plc (AIM: BCN), the London listed lithium company, is pleased to announce NI 43-101 compliant Measured + Indicated resources of 124,974 tonnes of contained lithium ('Li') at its 50% owned Zinnwald lithium project ('Zinnwald' or 'the Project') in southern Saxony, Germany, representing a 30% increase from the previous PERC resource estimate of 96,200 tonnes. The total resource estimate for the Project (Measure + Indicated + Inferred) is 142,240 tonnes of contained Li. The mineral resource estimate forms part of the Feasibility Study ('FS') for a high value lithium product operation at Zinnwald that will supply the fast-growing European battery and automotive sectors. The FS remains on course to be completed in Q2 2019.

Zinnwald is located in southeast Germany, some 35 km from Dresden and adjacent to the border of the Czech Republic and within 5 km of the town of Altenberg and 50 km of the town of Freiberg. The Project is in a granite hosted Sn/W/Li belt that has been mined historically for tin, tungsten and lithium at different times over the past 300 years. The strategic location of the Project allows immediate access to the German automotive and downstream lithium chemical industries.

Almost every major European carmaker will launch one or more electric vehicle (EV) models over the next 18 months.
Next year will mark the start of a huge EV ramp-up for the world’s biggest carmakers — and that’s expected to have a serious impact on demand for key battery metals such as lithium, cobalt, manganese, HPA and nickel.

Euro car-makers have a lot of ground to make up on EV leaders Tesla, Nissan and Chinese manufacturers – who continue to break production and sales records every month.

Tesla sold an estimated 22,250 Model 3s in September in the US alone according to this report — the highest ever for sales of a single plug-in electric car in a month, and the first time an EV has beaten 20,000 sales a month in the US market.

French-owned PSA Group — which sells the Peugeot, Citreon, DS, Opel and Vauxhall brands — is undergoing an self-described “electrification blitz” from next year, as it aims for 100 per cent EV core models by 2025.

This is a company that made net profit of about $2.4 billion on car sale revenues of $50 billion in the first half of 2018.

Its Peugeot and Citreon brands showed off fully EV and hybrid versions of its popular models — due for rollout next year — at the Paris Motor Show last week.

It also unveiled its beautiful, fully electric concept Peugeot e-Legend car.


In response to a change.org petition to get the e-Legend into production, Peugeot boss Jean-Phillipe Imparato tweeted:

Germany’s Volkswagen Group estimates it will sell 3 million EVs in 2025.

Of that, its I.D. models – which starts production next year – are expected to contribute 1 million of those sales.

Audi, also part of the Volkswagen Group has started production of its e-tron EV ahead of full production in 2019; it’s expected to produce about 20,000 a year.

And the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle under the fully electric EQ brand will be launched by mid-2019 – part of a range that is expected to expand to include 10 new models by 2022.

LG Chem will supply electric vehicle batteries to Volkswagen beginning at the end of 2019.
LG Chem announced on Oct. 4 that it has concluded a deal with German carmaker Volkswagen to supply electric vehicle batteries.

LG Chem plans to supply the batteries beginning at the end of 2019, the company said in a regulatory filing with the Financial Supervisory Service.

LG Chem kept the volume and prices of the batteries to be supplied a secret, saying they are fluid due to market conditions. Yet market watchers estimated the contract value at 13 trillion won (US$11.5 billion).

Currently, the company’s customers include General Motors, Volvo, Renault, and Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp.

LG Chem operates electric vehicle battery plants in South Korea, China, the United States and Poland.

LG Chem has recently been putting efforts into securing hydroxide lithium and cobalt, which are major raw materials for batteries. LG Chem has also decided to establish a battery plant in Binjiang development district in Jiangsu Province. By 2023, the plant will have production capacity of 32 GWh per year.

"It seems that Korean and foreign battery manufacturers including LG Chem have started a race to expand production volume as demand for electrical vehicle batteries is expected to increase significantly," said an industry insider.

BYD and Panasonic are currently both calculating the possibilities of setting up a battery factory in the UK. According to media reports, both have each approached the UK government recently about the venture.

It seems that both companies have not been successful in negotiating the subsidies from Theresa May’s administration that they had hoped for.

The report also cites a meeting that happened at the recent Low-emission car summit in the UK, where a Chinese delegation including members from the BYD board, met with Theresa May. Insiders say that the British government has not been forthcoming with subsidies for the battery manufacturers. Another source countered that the negotiations are simply at an early stage, which is why no announcements have been made.

Great Britain has a subsidy programme for batteries called the Faraday Challenge, which is a subsidization programme for battery technology with a volume of 246 million pounds. The money available is “usually paid out in small sums”, however, making it unclear whether the battery manufacturers will benefit from the initiative.

It is also unclear which automobile manufacturers the battery manufacturers aim to work with: While Jaguar Land Rover is an obvious seeming answer, they also have ambitions of building their own battery manufacturing facility, for which they will likely enter a cooperation with an established battery specialist.

In a statement, BYD added that they are looking at several locations for a European battery factory, and that the UK were one of the options. In early June, the Chinese manufacturers had initially stated their interest in setting up a battery manufacturing facility in Europe. At the time, their statement to a Reuters reporter had specified that BYD were indeed looking to establish a battery cell manufacturing facility outside of China, for which Europe was a serious option. It does look as though the UK would be in a position to specialize as a tax haven in the post-Brexit world, however it seems that May’s administration still needs some time to figure out exactly how they will go about this.

As the Trump administration sought trade concessions from Mexico in recent weeks, automakers and their suppliers feared that manufacturing costs could increase by billions of dollars. Now, they are breathing a sigh of relief.

The auto industry is still waiting to learn details of the preliminary agreement that President Trump and Mexican leaders announced this week and whether Canada will join the deal. Car companies are also watching to see if anything will come of a European Union proposal to eliminate tariffs on vehicles and other industrial goods if the United States agrees to do the same. Mr. Trump on Thursday told Bloomberg News that offer was “not good enough.”

But analysts and consultants say most companies would be able to comply with the conditions in the agreement with Mexico that have been disclosed so far. Many of the changes that automakers would have to make — like hiring more workers in the United States — were in their plans anyway. But other changes, like requiring automakers to use more parts made in North America and an agreement to cap imports from Mexico, could raise costs and hurt some companies.

Companies “are glad they now have some certainty on what the new requirements are,” said Mark Wakefield, global co-head of the industry and automotive practice at AlixPartners, a consulting firm. “Now they can plan around them and go forward.”
