I have owned and traded IQE, successfully in the main, over the last couple of years but remain frustrated at the lack of progress with this company. Problems at the moment are multi-faceted. Association with Apple is the current major issue which is keeping us down, continued and persistent short selling interest which has been at high levels over a long period has been keeping us down over the last year or so, placing to II’s at 140p just over a year ago which leaves a bad taste but the biggest issue which needs to be addressed has been feeding the shorts is the quality of commercial executive management. The sad and unexpected loss of our CFO last year created an even bigger management vacuum in my opinion and whilst I fully recognise that the scientists at the helm are extremely talented and have brought the company to this position, they are lacking in crucial areas for a quoted company of this size. Some of the current management team need to be supplanted with experienced commercial executives to work alongside the scientists to translate what they are creating and developing into the business world in a way which is more easily understood to the investment community and of course commercially viable. Our leaders have been camera shy in recent months and appear to be waiting on our new CFO to do what they should have been doing. The Board need to wake-up, hire some market savvy people to support the new CFO and perhaps the shorts will start to consider cashing in their chips. I retain a small position in case of a takeover offer and perhaps that would be the best solution to import executives from the other partner to exploit the value potential here. I will keep a close eye on progress here as I remain convinced that the IP value underpins this company so the downside from here is modest. When momentum shifts it will move quickly and new money will come back in. Rest assured the II’s will be tightening the thumb screws so start to deliver or put up the sale sign!
