Our latest episode of the Investing Matters Podcast, featuring Janet Mui, award-winning investment industry commentator, has just been released. Listen here.
Is this a surprise? No, of course not. I wonder why the yards previously were closed?
Agree with the sentiment. If the track record for British yards was up to scratch the work would probably be pouring in and Belfast, Appledore and Scotland wouldn’t have gone bump.
I think the people complaining may be contributors to the downfall. We deserve a new chance imo and need to grasp it with both hands with everyone playing their part.
The project will take note of lessons learned from other vessel delivery projects, including in particular the new Islay ferries project, of the 2017 Audit Scotland report into Scottish ferry services, and of the recently published report of the Scottish Parliament’s Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee inquiry into the procurement and construction of ferries in Scotland.
“A first independent assurance review of the project has been undertaken.
“Formal gateway reviews will be undertaken at key milestones during the course of the project.”
Cmal said the chosen design consultancy will assist with the in-depth evaluation, feasibility studies and concept design of a vehicle and passenger ferry.
This includes developing general arrangement drawings and associated specifications that would allow shipyards to tender for the detailed design and build of the vessel.
The eight month long design consultancy is due to begin in July.
At a future stage, ship yards will be invited to bid to build the vessel on a fixed price basis - this aims to eliminate design, construction and operating risks for Cmal or the vessels’ charterers.
The ferry designer is required to have proven experience and demonstrate understanding of the design and operational considerations of hybrid systems, all electric systems and fuel types.
Cmal said: “The Mallaig-Lochboisdale new vessel project will look to replace the existing vessel MV Lord of the Isles, aiming to increase the resilience and reliability of the service whilst reducing emissions.
“In line with Scottish Government climate change commitments, the project will aim to deliver a lower emissions vessel utilising the latest proven technologies.
“Feasibility studies will be undertaken to understand the ability to install the necessary power and equipment to accommodate energy storage systems and shore power and the cost of these upgrades.

Plans for a new ferry to serve South Uist has taken a step forward with the search for a concept design of the vessel.
Scottish Government vessel-owning agency , Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (Cmal) is due to assess a list of potential naval architects.
The new vessel will replace MV Lord of the Isles on the Lochboisdale - Mallaig run.
She will also be designed to cover a number of routes on the west coast ferry network.
However, the new ferry may not be any longer in length than the Lord of the Isles nor carry any greater number of cars due to the navigational limitations of Mallaig harbour. Vessel length for the service is restricted due to the narrow entrance channel and tight turning room within the port.
Detailed studies will be carried out for the new ferry at Mallaig said Cmal.
Outline plans are in place to improve Mallaig harbour but these are expected to take at least ten years to deliver while a replacement for the MV Lord of the Isles is needed in the near term.
More to come

I’m not so sure about a fixed price for a future build contract. Without raw material increase clauses it could be a recipe for disaster I think.
After the change of name. Share dealings…..
“New “ Chair, …….. Nil.
CEO…………………Nil.
CFO………………….Nil.
Kave…………………Miiiillions
Also a little disappointed that there’s been nothing to back up the mini surge the other day. So, will the sp now drift back or have the three Nils got something up their sleeves?
Cheers guys, if it was less than the Quorn then the price looks OK!! I guess there would have to be some consideration, whether deferred or not. If it is deferred then there would need to be an arrangement to allow them to undertake the refurb befrore owning the vessel outright.
Know what was paid for the Atherstone?
Stokey12, yes I understand your thoughts but at least it would get a foot in the door, as long as we did the work efficiently. It could be a time to impress and show what we can do!
Stokey12, I’m sure they will. But, £700k over 8 weeks next year, well, it’s not gonna be a game changer.
IMO BP is a reality check for all posters. Keep it up Blair
Nobby31, If they do that how will they be able to pay themselves their disgusting bonuses?
BlairP. I think The SP is telling us what the results are going to be like.
The question for me is, will we test the ATL level of 12.8p?
Would anyone like to suggest what they think might send the sp on an upwards trajectory?
There have been numerous prior suggestions.
When FEED is complete, when the ML is awarded, when we get the EU grant money in. When we pick up a substantial contract…….
None of the above has worked. Somehow, I don’t believe the year end results will be a likely trigger either. Should we be fortunate enough to win a large build order, I don’t think the sp would respond until we have proven that we can build on time and within budget.
Personally, my thoughts are that this sp will be stuck in the range for quite some period before sinking or learning to swim. ( or should I say float?).
Point to note, it doesn’t say that.
Nobby, my thoughts are that the decline may be due to a potentially large investor instructing his broker to acquire a substantial order at an attractive price. Given the minuscule recent turnover, I think the mms would be happy to oblige.
Mistakes are, sadly, a part of life. However I wouldn’t expect a mega successful star to make one with this order of magnitude using his own capital. Time will tell.
Remember Kave Sigarroudinia has taken a very healthy position here. I’m sure it won’t have been on a whim! Nobby, maybe he will come to share your views of the bod and start applying pressure.
Stokey12, whilst everything you’ve stated is accurate (of course), we should remember that the finals were delayed by months. It seems to be logical to think that they’ve had soooooo much more time to prepare that the new year end results should have been announced quite promptly. My own take is that the bod are struggling with their figures and are hoping for a ‘substantial announcement’ to go along with the FY results, but, with our board, who knows!
