It is a surprise because there is fundamentally nothing to see a sustained rise here. Ask yourself how does get make money.

The buyback do save a chunk of dividend. I dont know what interest they are paying on their borrowings, but I suspect the dividend is more, so the dividend saved on the bought back shares is more than the debt servicing.

The blurp talks of excellent performance but the figures tell a different story.

In my experience the sp nearly always drops to or below the placing price, and in nearly all cases you are better off buying on the open market.
But, doing so does not bring fresh cash into the coffers, which is why I have not done that, and bought the rights instead.

Cannot believe people are still under the illusion that market makers manipulate the sp either up or down.

Shorting is borrowing shares at a high price to sell them later at a lower prices and give them back, and pocket the difference.
In the case of ocado they are doing it because it's an unprofitable loss making business, and the headwinds are only getting stronger so the share price is likely to drop much further.
