Mr Baatar said Rio was also interested in the other metals that will be required for the electrification of transport, such as copper and ''high purity nickel''.
Rio has in the past two years discovered a prospective copper target in Western Australia's Paterson province called Winu, and the company continued to spruik an aggressive schedule for that asset last week, suggesting that mining could commence at Winu in 2023.
That surprisingly aggressive schedule could be designed to maximise Winu's appeal to Newcrest Mining, which owns the nearby Telfer mine and needs to find a new source of copper and gold ore by about 2023 or risk shutting Telfer's infrastructure.
While Winu could be an option for Telfer, a far more likely source of supplementary ore in 2023 is Greatland Gold's Havieron discovery, which is located about half the distance from Telfer as Winu.
Newcrest has struck a partnership with Greatland Gold over Havieron, and has described the asset as one of its two most important exploration priorities globally. Rio said it was looking at gas and renewable power options for Winu.
