BERLIN, Sept 17 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkelon Tuesday called for a return to an international deal curbingIran's nuclear activities as the only way to defuse tensions inthe Middle East.
"We believe that the deal to stop Iran from acquiringmilitary nuclear capabilities is a building block we need to getback to," Merkel said during a news conference with Jordan'sKing Abdullah.
"But there is also a long list of other burdens coming fromIran like the ballistic missiles programme and its engagement inSyria," she said. "In recent days tensions in the region roseand Germany will always be in favour of deescalation andlong-term solutions are only possible through a politicalprocess."(Reporting by Joseph NasrEditing by Michelle Martin)
