Linde And ITM Power Pact To Build World Leading Green Hydrogen Plant

Wed, 13th Jan 2021 11:39

(Alliance News) - Linde PLC on Wednesday said it will build the largest of its kind electrolyzer plant alongside London-listed ITM Power PLC.

The world's largest proton exchange membrane, based in the Leuna chemical complex in Germany, will produce green hydrogen, Linde said.

Linde said it will own and operate the asset. It will be built by ITM Linde Electrolysis GmbH, a joint-venture between the Dublin-headquartered chemicals firm and Sheffield, England-based ITM Power, an energy storage and clean fuel firm company.

"The new 24-megawatt electrolyzer will produce green hydrogen to supply Linde's industrial customers through the company's existing pipeline network. In addition, Linde will distribute liquefied green hydrogen to refueling stations and other industrial customers in the region. The total green hydrogen being produced can fuel approximately six hundred fuel cell buses, driving 40 million kilometers and saving up to 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide tailpipe emissions per year," Linde said.

Linde shares were up 0.2% at EUR218.00 each in Frankfurt around midday on Wednesday. ITM Power, listed on London's junior AIM market, was up 5.7% at 596.95 pence each.

ITM Power Chief Executive Officer Graham Cooley said: "This is the first sale via our joint venture with Linde and is currently the world's largest announced PEM electrolyser. This is a significant addition to our sales pipeline and illustrates how the capacity and efficiency of our new factory allows us to tender for much larger scale projects."

The plant is scheduled to begin production in the second half of 2022.
